In spite of Covid-19, one of the most anticipated yearly fundraisers, here in Houston launched without a hitch.
Houston Restaurant Weeks is the single largest fundraiser of its kind in the country. It’s normal run is August 1st through Labor Day. However, this year, the organizers extended it through September 30th. If you find yourself in Houston during this time, please check out one of the many participating restaurants. https://houstonrestaurantweeks.com/
The Houston Restaurant Weeks was the brainchild of Houston tv and radio personality Cleverly Stone. With her extensive network in the Houston culinary community, she decided to launch the Houston restaurant Weeks in 2003 as a fundraiser for the Houston Food Bank. This yearly event has raised to date, over $16.6 million to fight hunger in Houston. It has provided almost 49.8 million meals for those who are food insecure.
From fine dining to the casual affair, all participating restaurants donate a portion of every HRW meal to the Houston Food Bank. This also gives patrons the opportunity to dine at their favorite restaurants or the chance to explore a new one, while giving back to the community. Dining out for a charitable cause is a great excuse to get out & about. And the restaurants have taken great pains to protect their patrons and are making sure that they sanitize often & adhere to social distancing protocols.
Sadly, Cleverly Stone passed away in May. I had the chance to meet Cleverly back in November, as I was the lucky winner of a gift certificate from her radio show “Cooking with Cleverly”. She loved what she did, she loved the Houston community & she was loved back in return. Even though her death has left a void, her daughter Kate and other family members have picked up Cleverly’s torch to ensure that her legacy lives on.
