Singapore Hawker Food : Hum Jin Pang (Fried Dough Fritters)

Are U Hungry 😋?

@ Maxwell FC, 1 Kadayanallur St.

Stall : (China Street) Hum Jin Pang #01-28.

Tabao 6pcs salted and 6pcs sweeten w/ coated icing sugar @ $2 in packet.

(Ie 6pcs for $1.00)

What’s so good 😊?

I had known this stall for more than 2 decades, started by her late Dad (more than 40years ago) whom had started this singular product called “Hum Jin Pang”, a humble heritage snack created by Cantonese migrant origin, I think 🤔 ... 😮

Ms Li, existing owner, had taken over the stall since her late Dad’ passing and had acknowledged that she had been helping her Dad since she was young and had been baking and frying the Hum Jin Pang for 30 years now ... 😮

Hum Jin Pang literally meant Fried Dough fritters. Made from fresh dough (mixture of bread flour, yeast, baking soda, baking powder, alkaline water recipe).

Interestingly, her made version never look 👀 the same size nor shape .., 🤩 😮

There are only two variations : (see photo)

1. Sweeten : red bean filling and differentiated with sesame seeds and usually U have a choice to coat w/ icing sugar.

2. Five Spice Powder & salted mixture : filling at centre or side w/ five spice powder & salt mixture for the extra kick on your senses.

I must professed I liked both ! Upon fried inside the wok at good hot temperature setting, it’s piping hot🔥 @ outside with its crunchy and crispiness, all in one ! while it’s soft, puffy and tasty @ inside. Both variations are chewy and bite off easily, at its central core part with its delectable fillings too ! 😮 🤩

Best part in this stall, U may be asked to DIY (Do It Yourself) to help to fry the Hum Jin Pang, when your Q turn come ... it’s their tradition ! 😮 No question asked as she runs OMO (One Man/woman operation), U got no choice ... 🤣 😮!

Inarguably, the only stall in Singapore 🇸🇬 that U have to fry with the long chopstick while she roll the dough and add the fillings and drop into the big wok for frying and U chopstick then flip back till brown colour, then pick up and drop to the tray with many holes to drip the excess oil !

Once those quantity added to your ordering, she may pack for U or u may have to DIY accordingly as per her instruction ! (It’s great “woking” fun time though 😃) ... 😮 🤩 ⭐️ 👍

To me, it’s an Old School and Heritage snack that’s worth preserving and continue the tradition of originality and maybe add other filings or even re-package to cater for younger generation to munch this delectable snack of our time !

It’s Hum Jin Pang ... Yummily 😋 Great 👍!
